Sidequest: Scions of the Seventh Dawn - Opus XI
How did FFTCG’s favorite tribal deck feel in Opus XI?
Let’s get something straight right away: I made a mistake. This segment is supposed to be a fun and cheery look at some goofy brews or decks that take risks to see if they pay off. I brought the wrong 50 cards because Scions is extremely strong today, perhaps in a better place than ever before. This felt like doing all the sidequests in the entire game, and returning to the main quest massively over-leveled.
If you play competitive FFTCG, you’re aware of Scions. They have always been a darling of Swiss, but lose really hard to certain decks and don’t often threaten to win after top cuts. The deck has always done pretty well and pressured opponents heavily. Originally, I wanted to add a few new tech pieces to the existing Scions shell, wondering if this is the set that Scions makes major gains. I got a lot more than I bargained for.
If you want to watch a few games, here’s a clip of the deck in action.
The big winners
This is a place where Kuja really shines. Everything that card does is exactly what Scions wants. And, adding in Starter Vincent just makes it even better.
Puck and Aranea help you keep playing cards named Yda and Urianger, which are pretty good cards to play as many times as you can.
The underperformers
I put in copies of the two new Sephiroth cards in here, and ultimately it felt like they never really mattered. It wasn’t entirely sure if their tech was necessary with the amount of pressure and removal that the deck can already access.
The changes
I’d probably replace Sephiroth with Illua, and possibly the Legendary Wol. Mist Dragon is a card choice I made out of respect for Marche, but it’s really not helping the list that much and it can go, too. And that’s probably all I’d change!
Let’s wrap this one up with an apology to John Schreiner who brought a knife to a knife fight, only to be met with several guns and a cannon. That’s my bad and I will never disrespect Scions again for thinking they are aren’t a very powerful deck, and neither should you, dear reader. I deeply appreciate John’s patience with my oversight.
Once again, you can watch matches featuring this list here. Thanks for reading! We’ll be back next time with some proper side quest nonsense.
