Friday Futures #2- Ultros
Don’t tease the Octopus, kids!
Ultros
In just a few short hours the Tampa CC will be happening. I’m currently riding in a car with my Returner breather (Adam Lane and big Dumpy himself Chris Adams), and all I can think about is warm weather and sunshine. See, being from VA, we don’t see the beach much (VA BEACH IS TERRIBLE), so this Tampa trip is a welcome break. Of course when I think of the beach I think of the best boss to every grace the Final fantasy series, everyone’s favorite Uncle, ULTROS!
Now, there are a few Ultros cards in Chapters, but I was thinking about going a different way with the tentacle man himself in this design. While playing through the game, we realize that he is more there as comedic relief and truly never presents an actual threat to the team. You fight him multiple times throughout the game, and he even appears later on as the host of the coliseum. The battles are faily easy anf if Sabin is there with burning fist/fire knuckles, you can usually one hit him.
This made me feel that Ultros should be fairly squishy (he is an cephalopod after all) but wasn’t sure if he should be a forward with low power/ a backup/ or a monster. I ultimately decided a backup would be the best bet, but added some interesting text to play along with his “harmless” nature and comical aspects So without further adieu, I present Uncle Ultros for your design viewing pleasure!!!

(Fire) and tap; put ultros into the break zone, deal yourself 1 point of damage, then deal your opponent 1 point of damage.
If Ultros is put into the break zone, you may search your deck for a copy of a card named “Ultros”.

I really wanted to give life to the multiple battles you have against him so the recursion seemed fair. Also, he doesn't really do anything as a backup unless you allow him to (ie: just let him slowly whittle you away without hitting him in return) so I felt the ability added some nice flavor. I had a forward designed that I can share should the crowd want it. hopefully you folks enjoy the tasty future for today, and as always let us know what you think! Until next time Returners…….
