Cactuar Correspondence - Weekly FFTCG Chat 10/25/18
let's talk fftcg!
Every week, there is something new to discuss and analyze in this game. In this feature, we answer your questions and respond to recent developments, new meta decks, specific cards we like or don't like -- you call it, we'll answer.
If you want to join the conversation, send us your thoughts! We would also love to hear the questions you have next week, so please shoot us a message at Facebook or on Twitter. Thanks for reading!
Assuming you get all the cards you want from your packs, what’s the archetype you plan to play on Week 1 of Opus VII and why?
AUSTIN: I am going to play Ninja's,because they are getting support and well, there's a story behind it. You'll have to listen to the Toronto episode if you don't know.
ADAM L: Right now I wanna try Mono Fire. I've actually already started testing it. The new stuff does feel strong. However I think its still gonna have some issues. The deck has very few answers to cards like Yshtola (5-068L).
CHRIS: I’ve been testing Earth Fire Warriors of Light and its a lot of fun and have been pretty solid in testing. That’s what I plan to continue tweaking and improving well into the beginning of the meta
ADAM D: I’m looking at Mono Fire, but really intrigued at all the cards that make Lightning (4-115L) better. That card was always a power house and now it’s got some exceptionally strong and new parts of the package.
If you were forced to play with three elements, which would you go with?
AUSTIN: Lightning, Fire, and Ice. They have been the main elements of deck I have played throughout my time in FFTCG. I think Earth is too big-dumb-forwards for me, Wind is too cutesy, and I've never really been a control player so I typically refuse to play water/blue in most card games.
ADAM L: Easy: Wind/Water/Earth. I loved playing monsters and that was already three colors. I also think there is a ton of synergy between these three. In the upcoming set you can probably do a cool three color standard unit deck with these colors as well.
CHRIS: Earth, Fire, and Ice.
ADAM D: Fire, Wind, and Lightning. Unblockable, haste, and neat combos. It would be really difficult to jam all of that into a 50 card package, though.
Is Lann the card that Mono Fire needs?
AUSTIN: No. But it's a start. Fire needs an actual modal summon, and for the burn summons they have to actually matter. Everyone saw the debates on Ifrit. If Fire is about ping damage and big plays, then make it as such and give Fire more summons like the 2 drop Bahamut. Deal 8k but you can't have cards in hand. Sure I don't worry about discard because I don't have to have a hand. Let fire have spells that deal 7k on cast but if it's the 2nd summon in your turn deal 9k or the third summon deal 12k. I don't see why that would be so bad. Fire, FIra, Firaga? Lets do it! ( I feel like I've said the same thing like 4 Opi in a row now)
ADAM L: No. I think he is a pretty good card that can finish out game but his ability is pretty expensive. I think Mono Fire still needs a few more tools to be a top tier deck.
CHRIS: I don’t think he is. Jecht, however, is everything as advertised. Lann has a very neat ability but will most likely be removed before you can take advantage of his ability. But, this is one of those cards I hope I’m wrong about!
ADAM D: I like him at 4 CP, because that slot is not as crowded in Mono Fire as others, but his ability comes up just a tad short. If you paid for his ability and got a straightforward “Break a Forward” out of it, feels a bit stronger.
What do you think will be more important: the Warrior of Light cards printed in Opus VII, or the new Yuna in Opus VII?
AUSTIN: I want to say WoL cards, because they seemingly just have more initial first glance value and that's what people flock to. But some Big Brain Rancher will surely figure out how to make that Yuna be the most hated card in the format.
ADAM L: The WoL cards easy I think. Aigis (7-002R) is pretty nuts in my opinion and Sol (7-012H) is also very good. That alongside existing WoL cards will be good. Also I think those 2 cards will be good outside of things that are WoL focused.
CHRIS: The Warrior of Light cards. The ones that I’ve played are extremely solid.
ADAM D: I really want to see YRP pop in Mono Wind, and it can do that now. But, the power level of the new Warrior of Light cards is pretty insane so I think they’re going to be competitive. The new Yuna will probably find a home in a certain kind of deck too, but we’ll see less of it.
Do you ever anticipate a multiplayer aspect to this game, where more than two players are playing in a match?
AUSTIN: It would be an interesting thing to see happen. Like a two headed giant format where two vs two share 11 life could be fun. I'm sure folks will find a way to make one as I know a fair amount of players come from MtG that has a large amount of multiplayer formats. I'm a purist still at heart though so I want the normal game.
ADAM L: Not really. I mean you can already do it but personally I don’t think it would be that fun but hey however people can make the game fun I'm for it. I just want more people playing.
CHRIS: Maybe. I’d like to see a two headed giant type of format for this game. It could be a lot of fun.
ADAM D: I can’t personally imagine it, but yes. I never would have thought up EDH either, but that’s a huge format for MtG now. It would be neat to play 3 or 5 player matches of FFTCG.
